How to Choose The Right Solicitor

How to Choose The Right Solicitor or lawyer for your needs can sometimes be a daunting process, especially if it’s your first time doing so. We don’t want you to be making a stab in the dark. We’ve written this guide to give you a few pointers and tips for finding the right solicitor.

Finding a solicitor.

There are many places to find solicitors and lawyers. We Talk Law are of course here to help, but you can also browse the directories of the Law Society, or search locally in Google for solicitors you can talk to. We would recommend making a list of five or six, so you can compare your options.

The right solicitor for the right case.

It’s essential to find a solicitor with the right expertise and experience to handle your claim. For instance, if you’ve been dismissed unfairly, you will want a solicitor who is experienced in employment law. It’s the same for immigration law advice, and family law.

Do your research.

It’s recommended to do your research before choosing which solicitor you’ll use. For example, you may want to know whether they’ve handled similar cases to yours in the past, or what their success rate in court is.

Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and ask these questions. If you experience a poor level of service whilst making your first enquiry, then you are likely to expect the same level of service ongoing. Make sure to have all necessary documentation with you for any call, and have all your questions written down.

Assessing solicitors’ fees.

Solicitors will charge either hourly, on a fixed rate, or on a no win, no fee basis. You will need to decide which is the best choice for you, and make your decision accordingly. If you are not very confident about winning your case, you may want to consider the no win, no fee option if it’s available for your type of case.

Just be aware that sometimes you may have to pay the legal fees of the other party if you lose, so be sure to read any small print, and have any unknown clauses explained to you. You may also be required to take out some insurance to cover these costs in the event of a loss.

Going to court will cost money, no matter what. It’s simply a matter of how much. Advice from We Talk Law will help you work out your options and take the correct route for your case.

Compare any estimates.

It’s also important to compare the overall estimated costs. That way, you make sure you’re getting your money’s worth. You can simply compare on a like for like basis, and also the overall level of service. Although one estimate for legal advice may be slightly higher, it may also be worth more to you, and better in the long term. Once again, make sure you understand any extra services, so that you know their worth.
